Since 1988
By and for the people of Noordwijk
40 years
History
- 1988
In January 1988 the first gala takes place. Frans van der Veen wanted to bring a good Caribbean band to Noordwijk around the turn of the year. The plan: a party for 150 paying guests in the Casino Tennishal, where Azzurro stands today. The municipality rejected that venue for safety reasons. The owner of Hotels van Oranje was willing to take part, provided at least 400 guests came. With the help of friends that worked out, and the Stichting Nieuwjaarsgala Noordwijk was founded to run it professionally.
- 1999
The gala grows, helped by ideas such as the 60 second game, a wishes campaign and the Noordwijker of the Year election. All of Noordwijk meets on one evening. Until 1999 the gala is free; then so many visitors come that it becomes impossible to manage. Since then an entrance fee and the dress code safeguard safety and quality, and together with the sponsors’ contribution they cover the costs.
- 2027
What began on 2 January is now a fixed tradition in early January for young and old. Still by and for the people of Noordwijk, organised entirely by volunteers, at Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin.

Want to help out on 8 January?
The gala runs on volunteers in the run-up to the event and for the entertainment on the evening itself. The lockers, entrance and bar are run by Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin, who arrange and staff this themselves in consultation with the organisation. Want to help out? One message is enough.
